CALL News

New Name:  From now you might notice CALL also being referred to as CALLplus.
In for a penny...:  Sometimes it is hard to put a figure on what buys what in a charity that provides services rather than buying ‘things’ such as medical equipment. However we at CALL believe it is important that you know how your money is used to support people with cancer and other life-limiting illness, their carers and families.

Meet Our Staff

Linda Frodsham - Volunteers' Manager South Manchester

Linda joined CALL originally as a volunteer whilst working in the hospitality industry. In 2003 she was employed by CALL as Listening Line Co-ordinator and in the following year was successful in gaining the position of Volunteers Manager at CALL South Manchester.

Linda feels very privileged to provide help and support people living with cancer. She finds the social group STARS that she runs twice a month particularly rewarding as it brings much joy and laughter to those who may otherwise become isolated by cancer.

Lynne Bezzina - Volunteers' Manager Trafford

Lynne began her nursing career in 1971 and was successful in gaining the RGN and RSCN in 1975. She remained in nursing until 1998.

She became a volunteer with CALL in 1993 and took up the Volunteers' Manager post in Trafford in November 1998.

Jan McCarthy - Volunteers' Manager Salford

Jan managed optical practices in Liverpool, she then moved to Leeds were she became the area manager for a contact lens fitting service. When her daughter started school, Jan also became a student at Manchester University, graduating in 2002.

Having nursed her mother with cancer, she volunteered at Manchester Royal Infirmary Cancer Information and Support Centre were she was introduced to CALL. She joined CALL as a volunteer in 2003 and later in that year became CALL's helpline administrator. Jan became Volunteers' Manager at Salford in 2008.

Rebecca Turner - Volunteers' Manager North Manchester

Rebecca joined CALL in October 2006 to provide some much needed temporary support for branches. She became a permanent member of staff when she was appointed Finance and Administration Assistant in April 2007. Rebecca loves helping at the Drop-ins/social events as she sees how important these are for clients, allowing them the chance to get out for a few hours, make new friends and forget their illness for a little while.

Rebecca enjoys working at CALL because every day is different and she finds great satisfaction in knowing she is helping to reduce stress for people by arranging transport to hospital appointments or just being somebody they can talk to.

Alison Barnes - Support Services Assistant

Alison Barnes joined the staff of CALL as Support Services Assistant and is based at our Salford office. She provides administrative support to Listening Line Volunteers and general cover for all CALL branches as and when required. Before taking a career break to raise a family Alison worked in banks and building societies.

Her hobbies and interests include being a Primary School Governor, Chair of the PTFA and a saxophonist in the Greater Manchester Police Band. Alison, who comes originally from Salford, is married with three young sons.

Keith Hatton -  General Manager

Keith Hatton was born in Bolton, Lancashire, and spent over 26 years as a musician in the Regular Army before retiring in 2002. After brief spells working for Central and Local Government, Keith joined CALL in May 2008 where he oversees the smooth running of services in Greater Manchester.

Keith’s hobbies include being a Pets as Therapy (PAT) volunteer and conducting The Poynton Royal British Legion Concert Band.

Karen Mercer – Communications and Development Manager

Karen qualified as an educationalist in 1984 before working for a number of voluntary and statutory organisations in the UK and overseas. She devised and delivered the education and community service at Hat Works Museum in Stockport before moving into marketing and fundraising for various arts organisations in the North West. She joined CALL in 2003 as Marketing & Fundraising Manager, becoming Operations Manager in February 2006. When Keith was recruited to overall Operations Manager in 2008 Karen returned to a communications and development role.

CALL is a local charity providing emotional support and home-based practical help to people living with cancer, and other life-limiting illnesses, their carers and families
