Our Secret Millionaire Volunteer

CALL recently featured in a brand new episode of The Secret Millionaire, Channel 4’s award winning documentary.

CALL was visited by millionaire Lee Stafford during his undercover stay in Salford. The episode was transmited on November 6th on Channel 4 and is still available on 4OD.

We got a very pleasant surprise to discover that the documentary was part of the ‘Secret Millionaire’ series and that the very involved and helpful volunteer who was involved was none other than celebrity hair stylist, Lee Stafford of ‘This Morning’ fame!

After spending time with staff, volunteers and clients, Lee was moved to give us a substantial financial gift. His generous donation will certainly have a very positive impact on CALL, and the episode will help to raise awareness of what’s going on locally and the issues people face when coping with long-term illness.

Here he talks about how getting involved changed his outlook:

Being on The Secret Millionaire gave me a different outlook on life. The unsung heroes are the carers. Their lives get turned upside down, yet they are the forgotten ones. It made me really appreciate what my mum has done for my brother and the whole family. The show also taught me what to do when someone receives horrendous news. I was always guilty of crossing the road rather than having to deal with the awkwardness of not knowing what to say. I was taught to step up, listen, don't be scared of silence, in fact let it breathe; if you don't know what to say, say "I don't know what to say". If you think the news is awful, say "it's awful" but most importantly, be there and empathise.

Lee was surprised to find out that CALL, like other charities, was struggling financially. This is what he had to say:

“I assumed all the charities I met were well funded because they had nice websites and glossy magazines but in truth they were running on shirt buttons and facing closures. Business people have a responsibility to help wherever they can, from donations to annual team-building days and 'staff volunteering initiatives' here. I believe we have a duty to help the old, young and sick. After all, it's going to be us or our loved ones one day.”

CALL’s Secret Millionaire episode aired on Sunday 6th November. Watch it here: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-secret-millionaire/4od#3276312
