Volunteers R Us
Volunteers are essential to CALL as they deliver our services to those living with cancer, their carers and families in the Greater Manchester area. There are various volunteering opportunities at CALL:
- Telephone Volunteers: work in their own homes on a rota system so that the help-line is covered day of the year between 9am and 4pm. The Listening Line is also available on Saturdays, Sundays and banks holidays between 7.30pm and 10.30pm
- Home-Support Volunteers: support clients in their own homes where necessary and/or accompany them to hospital appointments, social events, shopping, etc (in accordance with individual agreements between the clients and CALL).
- Fundraising Volunteers: assist with or organise fundraising activities, events and marketing.
It is possible for some volunteers to combine more than one volunteering role.
What qualities does CALL look for in a volunteer?
The most important qualities are reliability, flexibility where possible, a willingness to listen and a non-judgemental attitude. CALL has an excellent free training package for volunteers, which includes listening and communication skills, meeting a current volunteer and issues about cancer care amongst other things. All volunteers have a manager based at the branch for which they are recruited and there are regular support and information meetings.
All volunteers are legally required to undergo Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks before undertaking any role with CALL.
Are volunteers given any expenses?
Volunteers are reimbursed for out of pocket expenses. Usually special forms are filled in outlining any expenses incurred and we ask that receipts be kept where appropriate.
